The 'Standard' Transport

Diffused Resonance Transport

"The virtues of double-capstan drive have long been known to Nakamichi; we pioneered the concept. But, in addition to its many virtues--uniform tape tension, isolation of the tape from cassette-hub eccentricities, improved tape-to-head contact, superior tape guidance--there is one shortcoming that others wish away. With two capstans and pressure rollers rotating at the same speed, resonances build up at common frequencies.

In the unique Nakamichi Asymmetrical, Diffused-Resonance Transport, no two components rotate at the same rate. Capstans, pressure rollers and flywheels differ in diameter, and the latter are high-stability types machined from solid stock rather than cast or pressed from sheet metal. Mass and moments of inertia differ to "diffuse" resonances.

As added insurance, the transport is built on a non-resonant chassis formed of special aluminum alloys and plastics chosen for their specific ability to absorb vibration. Whatever slight vibration is generated by the motor and other rotating parts is attenuated quickly and does not reach the tape.

The Asymmetrical, Diffused-Resonance Transport is capable of such precise tape motion that the pressure pad within the cassette becomes the limiting factor. Its presence is not required for proper tape-to-head contact in a Nakamichi transport, so a unique pressure-pad lifter was designed to remove this source of erratic motion. The result is a tape drive mechanism with extraordinarily low modulation noise and a flutter spectrum devoid of resonances. And, most importantly, these innovations result in an audible improvement--a remarkable clarity and purity of sound unmatched by other decks"

Motor-Driven Cam With C-MOS Logic

"Unlike conventional designs that employ either flimsy levers or jarring solenoids to control transport function, the Nakamichi Asymmetrical, Diffused-Resonance system utilizes a smooth-acting, reliable, motor-driven cam operated by sophisticated C-MOS logic. Responding to the command selected by the feather-touch buttons, a servo-motor rotates a special control cam that smoothly engages the heads and pressure rollers, actuates the brakes and reel motors, and activates the amplifier muting circuits. C-MOS logic insures that each function occurs in proper sequence to prevent tape damage, and the action is notably smooth and quiet without the jarring and potentially dangerous motion of conventional solenoids."
